Consequent resentment and anger

A complementary consequence (sometimes masking one’s feelings of inadequacy) are feelings of resentment and anger at one’s lover’s infidelity, and rage at the thought of his amorous coupling with another. Euripides’ Medea anticipated Congreve’s ‘Nor Hell a fury like a woman scorned’:

Oh in all things but this,

I know how full of fears a woman is,

And faint at need, and shrinking from the light

Of battle: but once spoil her of her right

In man’s love, and there moves, I warn thee well,

No bloodier spirit between heaven and hell.11
